MOT records
What does MOT mileage mean?
MOT mileage is the odometer reading logged at the test. It helps track how far a vehicle has travelled between inspections — with important caveats.

How mileage is recorded
During an MOT in Great Britain, the tester records the odometer reading shown in the vehicle. That figure is stored with the test result in DVSA’s MOT database and appears in MOT history services.
The reading is whatever the dashboard displays at inspection time. Clock resets, instrument faults, or data entry mistakes can produce anomalies — treat single odd points cautiously.
Compare readings over time on our mileage check or within the MOT history timeline.
Why buyers and owners care
Mileage influences value and wear. MOT readings give independent-ish checkpoints each year (or at each test interval), which helps estimate average miles per year.
A car with low mileage but many corrosion advisories may have been stored outdoors; high mileage with consistent passes may be motorway-maintained. Context matters more than one number.
When mileage goes down or stalls
A lower reading at a later test is unusual. Legitimate reasons can include instrument cluster replacement (with paperwork) or correction of a previous typo — but it can also warrant further questions when buying.
MOTCheckers highlights decreases carefully without making unsupported claims. Use them as a prompt to ask the seller and inspect service records.
What MOT mileage does not prove
MOT mileage does not cover journeys between tests and is not recorded on every government system outside MOT. It is one data source, not a full mileage audit.
For purchases, pair MOT mileage with the V5C, service stamps, and any paid history check you choose to use.
Frequently asked questions
Is MOT mileage legally binding?+
It is an official record of what was seen on the test day, but it is not a separate legal certification of total vehicle mileage. Consumer and trading standards rules apply to misdescribed mileage in sales.
Do motorcycles record MOT mileage?+
MOT tests for motorcycles also record odometer readings where applicable. The same trend-reading approach applies.
